Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

Lanny,
My thanks for your "map-marking" post here, and for what you have shared about your personal history and background. It was good to gain some insight into who Homesong is. I pray that even if we have had disagreements that I can still take the opportunity presented here to "meet you where you are at in life," and that you might meet me as well, in the same manner.
I suppose you are on to something which, within this thread and discussion context, can be of great help: a time-out to see who we are and where we might all be coming from.
However, it's 1am right now where I am, and having just finished an afternoon shift I am quite tired. I also have to return to work in 7hrs. for a 12hr. overtime shift, so I don't actually have time right now to write something robust that might describe my own life-journey adequately. I thought I would just add this quick post to acknowledge what you shared.
Some of the people here are known to me and I to them; Kelley, Craig, and Andre would be the people who might have the most familiarity with me. As well, I am trying to get to know James, Ted, Dodd, Joyce, Ed, and any others who've chimed in on this thread better, as time moves forward - and also you, who have called yourself The Revealed Word.
For now, Lanny, I can direct you to something that is at least "somewhat descriptive" of myself: my post which was added to The Long Walk 2010, which might share with you and the others at least a portion of my life found at this link, http://www.dailyaudiobible.com/Forums/Messages.aspx?ThreadID=1000021567#new
If I can make the time to do so, I will write more of my background and faith in Christ (that will take a little more time than what I might have over the next 72 hrs., so I pray for everyone's patience). Some of it may resonate with you, Lanny. In your description of being "taught early own that 'two wrongs don't make a right' so capital punishment was wrong, and from that eventually embraced the seamless garment view that opposes killing in ALL its forms, from abortion to war to euthanasia," I have some commonality with you. And you have shown us all that your worldview comes, in part, from having a diverse background ("a great interest in science and and astronomy and pre-history paleo-anthropology and began to take [for the lack of a better word] a more 'liberal' approach to Scripture, that doesn't equate 'truth' with 'literal.'"); which makes me have a sense that you'd feel right at home in the campus of churches that I attend (which describes itself as "a church for people who aren't into church," although the place and people are much more than just "it's slogan").
I pray that your example of openness sets a high-mark for how we might all interact.
Praying in Jesus name, with all on this thread,
Tom
| TRWord,
To your post of 07/16/2010 04:48, I will simply restate three of the paragraphs of my post of 07/15/2010 12:52:
"In a former response on this thread, I had agreed that the Spirit is necessary for discernment, and for the gaining of wisdom from Biblical insight.
I also strongly disagreed with the assessment that ongoing historical Christian religion ('Christian' in the terminology of Spirit-led Christ-following disciples; and 'religion' in the classical terminology of the service and worship of God) has somehow been devoid of said Spirit, and has somehow been 'wrong' in what it has presented (even if, I would add, differing defined denominations and traditions have sprung up as history unfolds).
If the Spirit can indeed guide people into all truth and speak to them what is heard from God and the teachings of Christ (even if certain ones in our current time-line have not - or rather, not YET - had an 'aha!' moment their lives; see John 16 in entirety), then ongoing historical Christian religion can prove itself to men and women who examine it in investigative ways (via that same cooperative union with the Spirit); so that it is shown to such men and women that MANY historical writings, traditions, persons, and movements have had within them 'perceptive persons (who have seen) things for what they are.'"
These still seem to me to be true things, TRWord; even in light of your most recent post. I say this because, among the diversity of people here on this thread (Evangelical, Catholic, Methodist, Brethren In Christ, "unchurched," etc.), I cannot simply paint the Christ-following discipleship of all of said people with one common brush stroke, as you seem to continue doing. I hope to caution you against such a trend, and I would hope and pray that you might change your will here, so as to rethink how you might approach the community here with a more nuance understanding. We might all agree here there is no way for anyone to deeply and robustly know ANYTHING about those who've written-in here, save for taking the time to get to know them - of which, I have done with some, and not yet with others.
Of your words here, "the systems we have placed our faith in continue to fail... we desperately need a faith for the living," I find agreement with you. This short thread may have a great deal of responses, but it may share more of that aspect: http://www.dailyaudiobible.com/Forums/Messages.aspx?ThreadID=1000021508#new. I offer this for the sake of sharing views.
Would you be open to allowing yourself to become known to us, so that we might know you?
Praying with you,
Tom
| Who am I?
I am 62 years old, I’m retired yet not a retiree and I have been living here in the Caribbean since 1999. We have a small farm here where we raise tropical fruit and some live stock. (NOT FOR PROFIT) Wine making is my hobby. I’m in the quest of the perfect fruit wine. I was born on the island of Trinidad. The larger island of the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago. I had my first revelation in my 18 year. Paul’s declaration of God (SEE Acts 17:22-29). Paying particular attention to verse 28.
I came to the United States in 1970 at age 22 where I met my soul mate. This is our 40th year. So here I was in the land of total access and for fourteen years I worked in mid-town Manhattan, upstairs from Coliseum books, two blocks from The Unity Center and a stone throw from Gotham Books. Who needs food? This was my lunch hour.
My passion is to play some role in alerting believers to the fact that the god of this world has hidden the true gospel. (SEE II Corinthians 4:3&4)
| well.... that does help. At least I know you are not some college student purposefully yanking everyone's chain or out to correct the world at age 21. Actually Calico and I were in a deep discussion about Acts 17 a few days ago when DAB covered and verse 28 is one of my life verses too. "'In him we live and move and have our being'
| Kelley...ditto!!! TRW's post DID help, as I was operating under some of the same questions and suspicions, and now feel I know him a little better. Acts 17:28 is also one of my favorite verses, and it's interesting that Paul isn't quoting Scripture, but quoting a Greek poet to make a point about the Gospel. Even them, people were discovering Christian truth within non-Christian sources! God never leaves himself without a witness!!
| Lanny has excellent grammer.
| lol :) Thanks
| And he graduated from Millsaps 1,842 years ago.
| So don't argue with me about the early church...I was there!
| ROFL!
